Three things are called precious in the Scriptures: the blood of Christ is called “precious blood,” (1 Peter 1:19); and faith is called “precious faith,” (2 Peter 1:1); and the promises are called “precious promises,” (2 Peter 1:14).
They are a foundation of our faith, and we have them as such; and also of our hope. On these we are to build all our expectations from God; and in all temptations and trials we have them to rest our souls upon.
Satan promises the best, but pays with the worst; he promises honour, and pays with disgrace; he promises pleasure, and pays with pain; he promises profit, and pays with loss; he promises life, and pays with death. But God pays as he promises; all his payments are made in pure gold.
